May 2011–Desktop Wallpaper

The month of May features Rolf’s fabulous build Jet Arrows Mirage 2000.
The picture was taken in Germany during one of the Mirage sorties.

This EDF jet is powered by a 9mm Fan and 6-8S LiPo packs.
The Mirage 2000 is unique as it is manufactured by JetArrows in one piece (fuselage and wing are one unit).
Hence only the rudder needs to be glued on to complete the model.

T-45 Goshawk (Jet Teng)

The T-45 Goshawk is a fully carrier-capable version of the Hawk Mk.60. It was developed for the United States Navy (USN) for use in training.
The Goshawk’s origins began in the mid-1970s, when the US Navy began looking for replacement for its T-2 and TA-4 trainers.
The US Navy started the VTXTS advanced trainer program in 1978.British Aerospace and McDonnell Douglas proposed a version of the Hawk and were awarded the T 45 contract in 1981.

As the Hawk had not been designed for carrier operations, numerous modifications were required for Navy carrier use, including improvements to the low-speed handling characteristics and a reduction in the approach speed.
Other changes were strengthened airframe, more robust and wider landing gear with catapult attachment and an arresting hook.
It features a two-wheel nose landing gear.

The Goshawk first flew in 1988 and became operational in 1991.JTM T-45 full composite
BAE Systems manufactures the fuselage aft of the cockpit, the air inlets, the vertical stabilizer of the T-45 at Samlesbury, and the wings at Brough, England.
Boeing manufactures the remainder of the aircraft and assembles them in St. Louis, Missouri.

On 16 March 2007 the 200th airframe was delivered to the US Navy. Their requirements call for 223 aircraft, and the T-45 service is slated to continue until at least 2035.

F-100 Super Sabre

flyfly f-100 Another great project by Rolf.
This FlyFly F-100 Super Sabre was build, primed and then repainted by Rolf.

The Model features retracts, oleo struts, a 90mm EDF unit, full lighting kit incl. afterburner simulation.
Some aftermarket scale parts have been added in order to improve the look of the model.

Some info on the full size plane:
The North American F-100 Super Sabre was a supersonic jet fighter aircraft that served with the United States Air Force (USAF) from 1954 to 1971 and with the Air National Guard (ANG) until 1979. As the first of the Century Series collection of USAF jet fighters, it was capable of supersonic speed in level flight. The F-100 was originally designed as a higher performance follow-on to the F-86 Sabre air superiority fighter.

Adapted as a fighter bomber, the F-100 would be supplanted by the Mach 2 class F-105 Thunderchief for strike missions over North Vietnam. The F-100 flew extensively over South Vietnam as the Air Force’s primary close air support jet until replaced by the more efficient subsonic A-7 Corsair II. The F-100 also served in several NATO air forces and with other US allies. In its later life, it was often referred to as "the Hun," a shortened version of "one hundred."

Some info on the full size plane:bottom view of rolf's mirage 2000B
The Dassault Mirage 2000 is a French multirole, single-engine fourth-generation jet fighter manufactured by Dassault Aviation. It was designed as a lightweight fighter based on the Mirage III in the late 1970s for the French Air Force. The Mirage 2000 evolved into a successful multirole aircraft with several variants developed. The variants include the Mirage 2000N and 2000D strike variants, the improved Mirage 2000-5 and several export variants. Over 600 aircraft were built and it is in service in nine countries as of 2009.

F-18 Hornet

Another one of Rolf’s masterpieces.
This HET-RC F-18 Hornet for twin 70mm EDF units features a fiberglass fuselage.
After equipping the plane with RC components Rolf added scale lighting and repainted the model in a new color scheme.

Rolf-F18

The model is launched with a bungee (retract ca be installed) and performs very well despite the final flying weight of over 3kg.

Some info on the real plane:
The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) F/A-18 Hornet is an all-weather carrier-capable multirole fighter jet, designed to attack both ground and aerial targets. The F/A-18 was derived from the YF-17 in the 1970s for use by the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The Hornet is also used by the air forces of several other nations. It has been the aerial demonstration aircraft for the U.S. Navy’s Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, since 1986.

The fighter’s primary missions are fighter escort, fleet air defense, suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD), air interdiction, close air support and Aerial reconnaissance. Its versatility and reliability have proven it to be a valuable carrier asset, though it has been criticized for its lack of range and payload compared to its earlier contemporaries, such as the F-14 Tomcat in the fighter and strike fighter role, and the A-6 Intruder and A-7 Corsair II in the attack role.

Rolf-F18-2 F/A-18 Hornet provided the baseline design for the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, a larger, evolutionary redesign of the F/A-18. Compared to the Hornet, the Super Hornet is larger, heavier and has improved range and payload capability. The F/A-18E/F was originally proposed as an alternative to a completely new aircraft to replace existing dedicated attack aircraft such as the A-6. The larger variant was also directed to replace the aging F-14 Tomcat, thus serving a complementary role with Hornets in the U.S. Navy, and serving a wider range of roles including refueling tanker, and electronic jamming platform.

Aermacchi MB-339

SANY0049

This Aermacchi MB-339 in the colors of the Peruvian Air Force was build by Rolf out of a FlyFly Kit.
The EPO foam model was completely sanded down, the wings re-enforced, primed with Multiplex EPO Primer, painted and then protected with 2K clear.

The Model is powered by a 90mm Vasa Fan Housing, Aeronaut 2000 Fan Blades, NeuMotor and features retracts with oleo struts.
The plane has a fully working strobe and landing light system

Some info on the real plane:SANY0051
The Aermacchi MB-339 is an Italian military trainer and light attack  aircraft. It was developed as a replacement for the earlier MB-326.
The MB-339 is of conventional configuration, and shares much of the 326’s airframe. It has a low, un-swept wing with tip tanks and jet intakes in the roots, tricycle undercarriage, and accommodation for the student and instructor in tandem. The most significant revision was a redesign of the forward fuselage to raise the instructor’s seat to allow visibility over and past the student pilot’s head.

The first flight took place on 12 August 1976 and deliveries to the Italian Air Force commenced in 1979.Still in production in 2004 in an enhanced version with a much-modernised cockpit. Over 200 MB-339s have been built, with roughly half of them going to the Italian Air Force.

The Lockheed-Aermacchi MB-339 T-Bird II was a losing contender in the USA’s Joint Primary Aircraft Training System (JPATS) aircraft selection. Among the seven to enter, the Raytheon/Pilatus entry won, which became the T-6 Texan II.

According to an article posted on the Italian website ‘Il Porto Franci’, called ‘Armi e finanziamenti nel corno d’Africa’, Eritrea paid about $US 50 million for six MB-339 CEs in 1997. This is the original MB-339 with more advanced avionics for the ground attack role, RWR, uprated Viper 680-43 engine, and larger wingtip tanks. It is capable of carrying Sidewinder AAMs, AGM-65 Maverick AGMs, and laser-guided bombs. Unit price of the MB-339C would have to be somewhere around $US 8.3 million in 1997 dollars.

UPDATE:

Check out the video of the model in flight (there was a slight issue with the electronics at the end but no damage was done to the model).
